David Steele was born in Washington, D.C., and received his bachelor’s degree from the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland in 1985.

In 1986, Steele joined the St. Petersburg Evening Independent, where he eventually became the beat writer for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Over the years, Steele has worked at publications including the New York Post, the San Francisco Chronicle, the Baltimore Sun and ESPN’s The Undefeated. He also has co-authored two books, including Olympic champion Tommie Smith’s autobiography, “Silent Gesture.”
