Claire Smith was born in Philadelphia in 1953. She graduated with a journalism degree from Temple University and was convinced along the way that she wanted to be a baseball reporter, no matter what. Before joining ESPN as a baseball editor in 2007, Smith worked as a columnist, national baseball writer and editor at The New York Times, Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia Bulletin and Hartford Courant.

Smith won the inaugural Shirley Povich Center for Sports Journalism’s Sam Lacy-Wendell Smith Award in 2013, National Association of Black Journalists Legacy Award and has been nominated for two Pulitzer Prizes, among other honors.
