Robert P. (Bob) Ryan was born on February 21, 1946 in Trenton, N.J. He has been deemed the “quintessential American sportswriter” by peers such as Tony Kornheiser, and has covered Boston sports, most notably the Celtics, and sports events for the Boston Globe for more than 44 years before retiring in 2012.

Ryan was the Celtics beat writer at the Globe for a total of 13 years on three separate occasions throughout three decades and also served as a general sports columnist.

He has written 11 books on baseball, basketball and football and is a four-time winner of the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association’s National Sportswriter of the Year award. He still writes columns part time for the Boston Globe.

Ryan regularly participates on ESPN’s “Around the Horn” and fills in for either Kornheiser or Michael Wilbon on “Pardon the Interruption.” His countless TV and radio appearances have made him a nationally recognized personality, beginning in 1982 when he left the Boston Globe for two years to work at WCVB, Boston’s local ABC affiliate TV station as a sports anchor.
