Angus Phillips, raised in Roslyn, N.Y., graduated from Boston University with a degree in English.

Phillips first job was at a small paper in Worcester, Mass.

After stepping away from journalism, Phillips returned to become a part-time copy editor for the Washington Post.

Eventually, Phillips was given the outdoor sports beat by sports editor George Solomon in 1975.

During his time as the outdoors reporter, Phillips covered topics such as hunting, fishing, boating and yacht racing.
