Andrew Beyer was born in Carbondale, Illinois. After working at The Washington Post for more than 37 years at age 72, Beyer retired from the newspaper on Jan. 1 of 2016. He nevertheless remains among the leading authorities in the country on horse racing, the author of four books and the originator of the Beyer Speed Figures, a numerical rating of every performance by every U.S. racehorse that appears in the Daily Racing Form.
