S.L. Price was born Jan. 23, 1962, and grew up in Stamford, Connecticut.

He attended University of Connecticut-Stamford, starting out as a history major before switching his major to English.

After transferring to and graduating from the University of North Carolina, Price got a job at the Sacramento Bee, where he became the newspaper’s first Sacramento Kings beat writer when the team moved there in 1985.

At 23 years old, he was the youngest NBA beat reporter in the country. In Sacramento, he also spent time on the San Francisco Giants and 49ers beat.

In 1990, Price accepted a job at the Miami Herald, where he was mainly a feature writer and columnist.

Four years later, Price left the Miami Herald to work as a senior writer for Sports Illustrated.

Price has won numerous awards during his career, including two Associated Press Sports Editor Awards, two National Headliner Awards, and awards from the National Association of Black Journalists and the Women’s Sports Foundation.

His work has been featured in The Best American Sports Writing anthology nine times.
