Dave Zirin was born Dec. 28, 1973, in New York City.

In 1996, Zirin graduated from Macalester College in Minnesota with a history degree.

In 2003, he joined St. Mary’s Today, a small Southern Maryland newspaper, doing a little bit of everything, including penning a weekly sports column.

Zirin first began writing for The Nation as a freelancer in 2004 and was hired as the magazine’s first sportswriter in 2006.

He’s been at The Nation ever since and is now the sports editor.

Throughout his career, he 2015 New York Press Club Award for Sports Journalism, the Northeastern University School of Journalism’s ‘Excellence in Sports Journalism’ Award and was featured in the 2017 edition of The Best American Sports Writing.
