About Dave Kindred

Dave Kindred, born in Atlanta, Illinois. He played baseball at Illinois Wesleyan University from 1959 to 1963 on a journalism scholarship he earned from Bloomington Illinois Daily Pantagraph. He wrote for the Pantagraph during his four years in school and two years after graduation.

In 1965, Kindred landed a job at the Louisville Courier-Journal and the Louisville Times, the morning and afternoon papers, respectively. At age 28, he began his dream job when the Louisville Times hired him as a sports columnist in 1969.

For more than 20 years after earning his first job as a columnist, Kindred wrote for the Louisville Courier-Journal, The Washington Post, Atlanta Journal Constitution, The National and Sporting News.

He ended his newspaper career at Atlanta Journal Constitution in 1997, but continues to freelance for an array of websites and magazines, including Sports on Earth and Golf Digest.

In 1991, his work in the profession earned him the Red Smith Award, an honor the Associated Press Sports Editor annually gives to an individual who has had a significant impact in the field of sports journalism. The National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association inducted Kindred into its Hall of Fame in 2007.
