Dave Anderson was born in Troy, N.Y. He graduated from College of the Holy Cross in 1951 and began his newspaper career with the Brooklyn Eagle covering the Brooklyn Dodgers. He later worked for the New York Journal-American before joining The New York Times in 1966. Both the Eagle and Journal-American no longer exist.

He won the Pulitzer Prize in 1981 for commentary, as well as the Red Smith award from the Associated Press Sports Editors Association in 1994 for contributions to sports journalism and the Dick Schaap award in 2005 for outstanding Journalism. He was inducted into the National Sports Writers and Sportscasters Hall of Fame in 1990.
