Dan Shaughnessy attended the College of the Holy Cross, where he was the sports editor of the student paper and graduated with an English degree in 1975.

He began his career as a beat reporter covering the Baltimore Orioles for the Baltimore Evening Sun in 1977.

He then became the national baseball writer for The Washington Star from 1979 until the newspaper folded in 1981.

Since September 1981, he worked for the Boston Globe, as a sportswriter covering the Boston Red Sox and Boston Celtics and then as a sports columnist.
